Mom, The Birthday Card

3/23/2011

My most sentimental and cherished keepsake is a 50 cent card from my mother.  I received it on my 27 th birthday.  I thought it would be fun to send it back to her on her birthday creating what would come to be a life long tradition between us.  Worn, faded and frayed, our birthday card is 37 years old this year (2011)

The original words say: "I'm glad you're having a birthday, I'd hate to grow old alone".  Arriving on the planet only 15 years apart, yes, we have been blessed to grow older together.  Every entry shares a piece of our life, love, inspiration and gratitude.  She is my rock.  My Mom is an amazing woman.

To Mothers

To Mothers Everywhere,

I want to acknowledge you for the love, support and care that went into mothering that only you know;

for the tears no one saw you cry and for the tears you still haven't released;

for the difficult choices you made in a moments notice and then had to live with;

for the times you risked being liked in exchange for the strength gained in your guidance and for the times you would have liked to of done something differently than you did;

for modeling honesty and integrity and for the pain you must have experienced when you couldn't;

for your silent faith that we could get through anything and for the moments you might have questioned all of it;

for the struggle between living a balanced life yourself and being available to everyone else;

for the painful losses you have endured but didn't ever give up and for when it was too unbearable for you to hold on;

for time you spent in physical pain without saying anything and for the times you reached out to let someone know you were hurting;

for words spoken that brought closeness and for the words spoken that created distance because you didn't know another way in that moment;

for struggling with your own adversities, addictions and fears while helping me overcome mine and for the unspoken wisdom that we are here to help one another.

For you............ exactly as you are.

For your love.......... exactly as you give it.

My own mother gave me gifts of acceptance, trust, perseverance, order, listening, friendship, a sense of adventure, positivity and love. I continue to take the gifts she gave me, add my own and give them away.

What gifts did your mother/grandmother give you?
Would you like to add to the letter acknowledging mothers?

I welcome your response and look forward to hearing from you, it increases my awareness and inspires me.

Your comments and questions may be posted unless you request otherwise. Sherri
