Chance Moments
I have caterpillars all over my floor again this year...
I find it intriguing as well as mysterious.
I placed more than 20 of them outside
and yet they continue to come in.
Last year,
I felt a sense of personal connection
when I saw them in flight out by the oaks
knowing that I had touched many of them
in their destined journey.
I delight in believing
that chance moments have
woven an intricate thread of meaning
throughout my life....
...........................................
Sharing compassion
through the eyes of a mother
that only moments before
gave birth
to her stillborn child...
Spontaneously embracing my brother,
boldly expressing
my love and gratitude for him...
not knowing this would be the last time I would ever see him;
he would take his own life in 3 months...
Quietly listening
while a prisoner wept inconsolably,
mourning the pain he has caused.
Feeling the magnitude of his suffering
as he says he has relived
a 10 second decision for 24 years.
His terror is not that he is dying of aids
and will take his last breath from a prison cell
but that he will take his last breath
unforgiven.
Each of them on their way to somewhere
when a chance moment
forever changed
my life.
